Catching Up: Indiana Hoosiers

Ok, Where Did We Leave Off?

What was the last game I recapped:  Game 7: Indiana vs. North Carolina (W, 83-59)

What has happened since?: Eight games have been played.  Games 8 thru 15...

Quick Recaps:
  • Game 8: Indiana vs. Coppin State
    • Win, 87-51 (8-0)
    • Sheehey/Oladipo scored 14 apiece (Oladipo: 14 pts, 6 rebs, 6 asts, 3 stls, 1 blk)
    • Watford/Abell scored 10 apiece (Watford: 10 pts, 7 rebs, 2 stls)
    • Zeller had 9 points and 7 rebounds
    • Oladipo had a Crean-era record of 20 deflections
    • IU opened the game terribly: shot 0-for-9, committed 8 turnovers in the first 10+ minutes
    • Coppin State gave the Hoosiers fits with their 2-3 zone
    • IU played a 1-2-2 three-quarter-court zone for the majority of the second half
  • Game 9: Indiana vs. Central Connecticut State
    • Win, 100-69 (9-0)
    • CODY: 19 points, 19 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 blocks.  Gettin' it done.
    • Watford: 21 points, 5 rebounds, 8-for-12 FG, 3-for-4 3FG.
    • Oladipo: 15 points, 9 rebounds, 5 steals, 3 blocks, 2 assists, 7-for-9 FG
    • Austin Etherington suffered season-ending knee injury
  • Game 10: Indiana vs. Butler (Crossroads Classic, Banker's Life Fieldhouse, Indianapolis, IN)
    • Loss, 88-86 OT (9-1)
    • First loss of the season. At least it was to an Indiana school.  Still, though...ugh
    • I was at my wedding so I didn't see this game and relied only on updates via my groomsmen and their cellphones
    • Zeller: 18 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, 1 block
    • Oladipo: 18 points, 4 assists, 4 steals, 3 assists, 2 blocks
    • Yogi: 12 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals
    • Vic/Yogi: 6 turnovers/apiece
    • Mosquera-Perea made his official college basketball debut: 2pts, 1 reb (3 Min)
    • No undefeated season this year, fellas.
  • Game 11: Indiana vs. Mount St. Mary's
    • Win, 93-54 (10-1)
    • Sheehey put up 16 points, 4 rebounds, 2 steals and 1 assist in 24 minutes off the bench
    • Oladipo had 14 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 steals.  That's fillin' up the stat sheet.
    • Abell finished with 12 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists in 22 minutes of action.
    • Zeller finished with 16 points and 6 boards.
    • Watford had 15 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists and a block
    • Yogi dished out a season-high 9 assists to go along with 8 points and 4 rebounds
    • Shooting display: IU shot 70.6% from the field for the entire game; 36-for-51 FG and 9-for-12 from 3FG (75%)
      • The Hoosiers' best team mark for field goal shooting in a single game came back in 1988 against Michigan State when they hit 71.2% of their shots.
    • Good news: Derek Elston returned to action.  He played 9 minutes, scored 2, had a pair of boards and a block.
    • Hanner was on the floor for 10 minutes but didn't come up with much.  He missed a couple inside shots and two free throws as well.  He also managed to foul a shooter on a three-point shot.  HMP is learning and will continue to be in the learning process for the remainder of the season due to such a late start.  However, I am sure we will see many glimpses of his potential and various snippets of super-athletic plays before the season is over.
  • Game 12: Indiana vs. Florida Atlantic
    • Win, 88-52 (11-1)
    • Big Handsome scored 24 points and hit 12 of his 13 FT attempts along the way.  He also grabbed 6 rebounds and accumulated a steal, an assist, and a block
    • Oladipo: 16 points, 8 rebounds (5 offensive), 1 steal
    • C-Wat: 17 points, 2 assists, 2 blocks
    • Yogi: 4 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assists, and a steal
    • 26-for-27:  That was IU's free throw stat line.
    • 11 offensive rebounds, 39 total
    • HMP: 10 rebounds in 13 minutes!  Also, he had his first dunk.
    • Jurkin:  He played!
    • Hollowell:  Sat out for the 2nd consecutive game for unknown reasons.  However, it was disclosed that the reason has nothing to do with academics or disciplinary action.
  • Game 13: Indiana vs. Jacksonville
    • Win, 93-59 (12-1)
    • Jordy: 20 points on 6-for-9 shooting from downtown.  He also notched 4 rebounds and 2 assists.
    • Oladipo: 14 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, 2 blocks.  Another full stat line from Vic.  Emerging as a national spotlight player.
    • Zeller: 16 points, 6 rebounds, 2 blocks.  Played just 19 minutes due to foul trouble and uncharacteristic turnovers.
    • Sheehey: 14 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 blocks
    • Yogi: 6 points, 10 assists (new high), 2 steals
    • Assists:  Hoosiers racked up 21 assists on 29 made field goals.  This has been a delicious common theme thus far.
    • HMP played 12 minutes and scored 6 points including going 4-for-4 from the stripe.
  • Game 14: Indiana @ Iowa (B1G: Game 1)
    • Win, 69-65 (13-1) (1-0)
    • Zeller: 19 points, 10 rebounds (5 offensive), steal, block assist.  Solid Big Ten season debut for Cody.  Saw 33 minutes of action and shot 5-for-5 from the line as well.
    • Oladipo: 14 points, 10 rebounds (3 offensive), 2 assists, 1 steal.  Vic is amazing...
    • C-Wat: 11 points, 8 rebounds.
    • Sheehey: 13 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists.
    • Yogi:  9 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 steal.  Terrific play from the freshman.  Showed his IQ and athleticism in this game.
    • The Hoosiers didn't play well in this one, but Iowa faltered in many areas as well which helped the cause considerably
    • Shooting: 26-for-65 (40%).  Jordy Hulls: 0-for-10 (0%).   Poor night for the Hoosiers in the shooting category.  Jordy, however, still played a great game despite his 0-fer.  He finished with 3 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 steals and not one turnover.
    • Defense:  IU held the Hawkeyes to 33.3% shooting (21-63) and outrebounded them by 9 (45-to-36)
    • Outplayed?: Hawkeyes bested the Hoosiers in several categories including FT made and attempted, steals, blocks, turnovers, fouls committed.
    • Conference Road Win:  Perhaps The MOST important stat of the night.  IU will begin the Big Ten season with a 1-0 record coming off a road game.
  • Game 15: Indiana @ Penn State (B1G: Game 2)
    • Win, 74-51 (14-1) (2-0)
    • C-Wat: 16 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists
    • Zeller: 15 points, 5 rebounds, 1 assist, 4 steals, 2 blocks
    • Jordy: 14 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists
    • Oladipo: 10 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal, 6 turnovers
    • Sheehey: 8 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal
    • 1st Half vs. 2nd Half
      • 1st Half: 44 points, 8 assists/14 field goals, 52% FG and 6-for-11 (54.5%) from 3-point land, 10-for-13 from the line, 5 turnovers.
      • 2nd Half: 30 points, 6 assists/8 field goals, 12-for-21 from the line, 12 turnovers
      • Noticeable difference.  Although the Hoosiers shot 53% in the 2nd half, they only made 8 total field goals.  Aside from a very stagnant offense, Indiana commited a dozen turnovers and made plenty of mental mistakes and miscues.
      • Luckily, Penn State went 19-for-60 for the game (31.7%)
    • 2-0 record in Big Ten play.  2-0 record in Big Ten road games.
  • Game 16: #5 Indiana (15-1, 2-0)vs. #8 Minnesota (B1G: Game 3)
    • Saturday, January 12, 2013
    • Assembly Hall, Bloomington, Indiana

Catching Up: What I've Been Up To

By Ryan Bramwell

Well, I have been away from this blog for quite some time now.  In fact, this is the longest posting drought I have had since the site's launch last summer.  But I have very good reasons for this lack of production I promise you.

What has happened since my last post on December 11th?
  • I got married!
    • Yes, on the 15th of December, I married the love of my life, Megan.  It took place in Madison, Indiana, where we both grew up and first met.  It was held at the Madison Presbyterian Church, which just so happens to be where my parents were married some thirty-five years ago.  The wedding was beautiful and as close to perfect as anyone could ask for.  Even the Indiana winter weather was uncharacteristically pleasant and the forecasted rain stayed away for the duration of the event.  The reception was held across the street within walking distance of the church.  There, I was able to mingle with tons of beloved family members and an absolute bevvy of friends that I cherish.  It was comfortably chaotic to have that many people you love all in one room at one time.  If I were able to spend the time with all those people that I wanted to spend, then I would probably still be there today chatting away.  Alas, there is never enough time and all I can do is give my thanks and love to all those who were able to come, write, or otherwise.  It truly was a perfect day.
  • I went on my honeymoon!
    • To be honest, Megan and I were probably counting down the days to our honeymoon more so than to our wedding.  After months of hard work and planning (that Megan did) we knew we were going to be more than ready for our stress-free vacation.  And with many planning hiccups, blunders, and flat-out negligence that was out of our control, we couldn't stress the phrase "stress-free" vacation enough.  I give all the credit in the world to my wife, who endured more planning fiascoes and ordeals than any bride-to-be ever should.  So, if you ever hear me say that "we" deserved a vacation, I really meant that She deserved it, whereas I just wanted one.
    • Because Megan has a wonderfully amazing aunt and uncle, Kathy and Clyde, we were able to visit a prime destination and live like celebrities for a week.  The honeymoon was in gorgeous Cancun, Mexico, where we stayed at the insanely luxurious Sun Palace resort.  Aunt Kathy hooked us up with a Concierge Level room which included 24-hour room service and enough amenities to make Ben Bernanke envious.  During our stay we hung out on the beach, dined in the fanciest of ways, and went on a guided tour to Chichen Itza, the ruins of a major Mayan city.
    • And, as expected, I was mistaken for a local on several occasions.
  • The Hoosiers played five games.
    • The Cream and Crimson won four out of the five games played since my last post.  The only loss came in overtime to Butler on the day of our wedding.  Indiana then rattled off three consecutive blowouts over Mount St. Mary's, Florida Atlantic, and Jacksonville.  Then, most recently, the Hoosiers traveled to Iowa for their first conference game of the season.  The outcome was much narrower than Hoosier fans were hoping for, but a road win is always a good win.  More to come on IU's recent games in an upcoming post.
  • The Reds are getting good early projections for 2013.
    • I will go over all the projections as well as any recent Reds news in an upcoming post.  Will Scotty Rolen retire?  Will Uncle Walt sign extensions for Bailey and Latos?  Just how good are the analysts predicting the 2013 Reds will be?
  • My Best Man is certified hilarious.
    • Nick Hall, my best longtime bestie whom with I share a bromantic relationship, has recently pursued his dreams and jumped into the standup comedy circuit. Nick has been performing sets in and around the Indianapolis area where he has been receiving outstanding reviews while capturing the attention and acclaim from various comedy club owners. Back on the 19th of last month I posted a video of Nick performing one of his victorious comedy sets (best viewed with headphones due to low volume). Check it out and remember to follow Nick:
